दरअसल, यह विवाद तब शुरू हुआ जब प्रणित मोरे ने बिरयानी की कीमत को लेकर एक टिप्पणी की, जिसे सामाजिक रूप से आपत्तिजनक माना गया। उनकी इस टिप्पणी ने महाराष्ट्र में सियासी और सामाजिक हलचल मचा दी। मामला इतना बढ़ा कि इसमें एफआईआर दर्ज की गई और जांच की प्रक्रिया शुरू हो गई।
मुख्यमंत्री फडणवीस ने इस पर प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए कहा कि राज्य सरकार ऐसी किसी भी टिप्पणी को बर्दाश्त नहीं करेगी जो समाज में वैमनस्य फैलाने का काम करे। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि कानून अपना काम कर रहा है और जांच एजेंसियां पूरे मामले की जाँच कर रही हैं।
फडणवीस ने साफ किया कि लोकतंत्र में बोलने की आजादी सर्वोच्च है, परंतु यह आजादी किसी की भावनाओं को आहत करने का लाइसेंस नहीं है। उन्होंने सभी से अपील की कि वे जिम्मेदारीपूर्वक अपनी बात रखें और किसी भी ऐसे बयान से बचें जो सामाजिक सौहार्द को नुकसान पहुँचाए।
इस बीच, पुलिस ने मामले में दर्ज एफआईआर के आधार पर जांच तेज कर दी है। राजनीतिक हलकों में भी इस विवाद की जमकर चर्चा हो रही है और विभिन्न दलों के नेताओं ने अपनी-अपनी प्रतिक्रियाएं दी हैं। फिलहाल यह मामला महाराष्ट्र की राजनीति में एक बड़ा मुद्दा बन चुका है।
